Chuga! Let's gooooo!
what's the deal with the satellite that went offline? known as a solid hurricane forecast site. Something like GOES-19 or sumtin. Small article read, didn't do my research to see what's up
Nice, Mitchell. Btw, it's cool how I can tap on pics here, and they blow up pretty high res. At least for me. Chugga.
It's startin to show up on my weather radio. Bay forecast 50kt gusts Friday. I think they called it extremely dangerous. Some phrase I don't remember hearin. It might be worse in the Bay than in the ocean. I know it's early and storms can wobble, etc.
We got a little rain over the weekend, but not too bad. At least we're starting to see a little bit of activity. Water hasn't been warm enough here yet but we're getting close.
Damn thing is headed the wrong way! Turn around and head east over Florida!
Stay safe Paulie! I'm sure you'll find your way inside the barrel of a wave at some point. Hope you get pitted, sooo pitted. 😎
Yeah IBC, I was watching your forecast page and cams and stuff. From the track, I was surprised that you guys didn't get offshores at all through this one. I would have thought you would have had offshores on the front end of the system as it headed west. Maybe it came up too high on land?
Okay IBC, looks like tomorrow (Thursday) you will have offshores for a couple of hours mid to late afternoon. And then the wind triples and goes back onshore. I guess you might have a little gem of a window, albeit a small one. Get some.
Yeah DP, I don't know what hurricane it was, maybe Milton, back in 2024. But I was in St. Pete for 10 days for my daughters dance stuff. We caught the last game at the Trop before it go destroyed. But for 9 days, the entire coast was flat. I was snorkeling, boating, fishing and what not the whole time. We left Sunday around noon, but when I woke up that sunday morning, the waves right in front of the hotel were 8 feet, perfect and offshore for like 3 hours. I had to bounce after that and we literally raced the edge of the cane the whole way up through Ocala. It was crazy, but I couldn't believe how perfect it got just for that 3 hour stretch. It was wild. I am sure there are good days here and there, but it was cleaner and better than anything I have ever seen on the gulf. It was perfection. Albeit for just 3 hours.
Yeah, I told the wife I would go back to that area again. It obviously wasn't a surf trip, so that was bonus at the end. And I snorkled all around the hotel we were in. Maybe 1/2 mile North of where that big pink hotel is when you come into St. Pete Beach.... I can't recall the hotel that it was. But the setup right out front turned out to be money. I just enjoyed the clear warm water and exploring under the surface for the whole time. Hilton Head Island has the healthiest, most nutrient rich water on the east coast, but it comes with a cost of typical murkiness, so there are only a hand full of days here worth exploring under water. Visibility is like 5 feet usually, if that...
We also spent time in that state park on the south end. We took boats over to shell island and what not. It was actually a very relaxing enjoyable trip, because the idea of surf was just never there, until the very end. And even a day or so ahead of time, they were unsure of the track. Most people had it going right into Tampa, but it stayed offshore, so even the day before, I knew the size would be up, but I was blow away with how clean and perfect those waves were, after it being an absolute LAKE there.
Another interesting point I recall, is that EVERY afternoon and evening, there were little pockets of Lightening and Thunder storms. Just little individual cells a mile off the coast. Like, all over the place. Every night. And typically, we get some of those too, but if you are at a pool or resort and there is lightening within a few miles, they empty the pool, people clear the beaches.
Mother fuckers in St. Pete Beach never even turned their heads. There was a thunder storm literally right off the beach in front of the hotel. Nobody got out of the pool. People still swimming in the ocean. I was like, what fucking planet am I on? I mean, maybe it just happens so much there that they can't empty the pools and ocean every time, but I thought that was interesting the whole time I was there. Lightening is common, but no joke. Surfers and swimmers die from that shit every year. Guy on Hilton Head Island got zapped the second year I lived here. It's like golfing too. When there is lightening anywhere in the area, they just clear the whole fucking thing. I know when some shit is coming when I am home because there are two golf courses within a mile and I hear the horns. That is the indicator.
But I guess in Tampa/St Pete they just don't give a fuck....
Cool town. I had been to Clearwater up the road a few times. I ran in the junior olympics back in the day when it was there. And a few years ago, my daughter was obsessed with that movie about the dolphin, Winter, with the prosthetic tail. So maybe 5-6 years ago, we took my daughter there to see Winter. Unfortunately, the dolphin died a year or so after, but it was cool as hell. The movie is a good watch too.
I know the surf sucks there most of the time, but other than that, I fuck with St. Pete Beach. I enjoyed my time there for sure. Being at a beach like that, with no hope of surf is definitely weird, but it forces you to relax. No watching the tides, or the clock or checking maps and looking at drives. Just sipping on a Mai Tai and chillin.
