IBC, I put some of my Banana leaves to good use. If you don't have a smoker, you can still do the same thing in the oven, low and slow.
But grab a pork shoulder. Order some Hawaiian red salt off Amazon for $7. Season the pork shoulder with the red salt. Only the Hawaiian shit works for whatever reason. Once seasoned, wrap meat in 2 large banana leaves. Tie it off using twine or butcher string.... Then wrap a couple of times in plastic wrap, then wrap the whole thing in foil. Put it in the oven at 225, or one a smoker at the same temp. About 10-12 hours later, once the internal temp hits 205, pull it, rest it, shred it and enjoy. Pro Tip: You can leave it in the over at like 180-200 for like 5-6 more hours if you can and all the fat continues to render and get flavor town all up in the cook....
Use them leaves IBC!
Haha, Zach. I remember my Filipino brother in law tellin stories of a whole pig wrapped with banana leaves, buried in a hole in the ground. Just smokin away all night. I don't really cook outdoors. I probably trim off a few leaves every week. I do feel semi guilty, wasteful, just tossin em in the trash.
Looks tasty, bro. 😋
Yeah, like I said, it will turn out fantastic in the oven as well. And round' here, you can grab an 8-10 pound pork shoulder for like $12-$15. It's the cheapest feast out there. You can feed the entire neighborhood, Lūʻau style.
Thanks, DP those are the backside of Waimea canyon in Kauai looking down towards the Napali coast. This is the shore break near Shipwrecks, hard to scale but thats 7’ face
Yes,as far as the image thing goes, this is a free version of the web forum. The upgrade to pro will allow as many images as you want within each post. I had to actually hack the code on the free version so the images embed. By default, they show up as a link...
That said, as I was telling IBC over the past couple of weeks, if we had enough interest and some more users, I will go ahead and upgrade. But until now, I wasn't sure if anyone was going to see the bat signal....
But I will look into upgrading the forum today so we can have all the bells and whistles. Stay tuned.
We built a kinda incognito shelter outa pieces of lumber and some of her potted plants. So far, so good on the seagulls. 🤞 It just looks like birds hoppin around in the bushes to em. Plus, the food is super close to the water. In the shade is way better than out in the 147° lawn. 🥵😉👍
The banana plants are back over the fence after freezin off last winter. The avacado tree is 7½ft tall now. 5yrs ago it was an avacado at the grocery store. I got a coupla little ropes in places tryna make him grow more even. Our gardens are doin pretty good. Just have to water a lot lately. Not a drop of rain with major maximum sun.
Here's one quick pic I found. Btw... I didn't start this. Former neighbor lady did. I think she just put toothpicks in a whole avocado. Suspend the avacado using toothpicks over a cup of water. I see people also just take the pit out and do it that way. After the roots sprouted, I put him in a small flower pot of dirt. That was almost 5yrs ago. She picked a Haas avacado. Apparently they're the best. I don't even like avocados, but the tree hopefully grows up nice and big. I can become a Guac Tycoon or at least give avocados to friends. 🥑😎🤙
This method lets you know you got a sprout before you put him in a small pot of dirt. 😉👍
The whole deal happened in my house. I just didn't start it. I think it's spelled Hass. Oops. I'm gonna say it was a few weeks for it to have little inch long roots. I'm pretty sure we just had the seed at that point. No more fruit. I wasn't really serious, more curious just watchin at first. Since it actually WORKED, I took over and ran with it. Haha
This all took place indoors outa the weather until the top piece sprouted a coupla leaves. He needed sun after that, so I moved him outside. Always put tender babies where they don't get beat up by wind or rain... or fried by too much sun.
Nice. I am going to try this over the weekend. I love avocados and Hass is pretty much all you can get here. Actually, scratch that. There is a little home made tortilla shop down the street. Little mexican shop. Up by the counter, they have the largest, fattest, most perfect avocados I have ever seen. I have been meaning to ask them if they pay the delivery guys to get them the best. They are always perfectly ripe, when all the store here are hit or miss. I have never once in my life seen a ripe avocado in Walmart or anything.
Oh, hey Zach. I haven't looked into what avocados grow in what zones and all. Could be your favorite ones like warmer weather than Hass. Galveston is kinda in its own zone, 10. Almost anything grows here except cold climate stuff like tulips. Y'all are in zone 9, like much of the Gulf Coast and Fla. There's a lotta bananas that won't even grow here in zone 10. Them ones I got are just about it. You oughta be ok with the Hass, but close. There's plants in Galveston that you can't grow across the Causeway on the mainland. We're right on the fringe of tropical here.
She did have a big ol avacado tree in her yard in Houston, so I know at least some kind can thrive in zone 9. I just don't know what type it was. Safe bet with Hass since it's doin so well here.
